What is 802.11G? | Wireless G | Wireless Standards: The 802.11G or Wireless G is an IEEE Standard following 802.11 which extends up to 54 MB/s using the same 2.4GHz band as 802.11b. Like other versions of wifi, 802.11-G supports WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) among computers, broadband routers, and other consumer devices. 802.11-G was launched in June 2003 and It is also called as 802.11-G-2003 Standard as well.
The 802.11-G gives a data transmission rate of 54MB/s similar to 802.11a and operates in the frequency 2.4GHz band similar to 802.11b. It is used to high-speed wireless connectivity in your home, office and other commercial spaces. Let us briefly see What is 802.11G along with its pros and cons.
What is 802.11G?
Wireless G is the third modulation standard of Wireless LANs (Local Area Networks). 802.11-G works under 2.4GHz frequency but operates at a maximum data transmission rate of 54MB/s. Wireless G incorporates the radio communication technique named as OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiples) which was earlier introduced in the IEEE 802.11a (Wireless A). This OFDM technology enabled 802.11-G and 802.11-A to achieve a significantly better performance than 802.11-B.
Also, The wireless G products adopted the same frequency band as that of B. The wireless B (802.11b) standards used 2.4GHz which is utilized by 802.11-G which gives greater signal range than the devices which uses 802.11a standard. As Wireless A uses 5.8GHz, the signal is available for a shorter distance only. Hence, 802.11G operates under 2.4GHz band at a transmission rate of 54MB/s which is better than both 802.11b and 802.11a. There are a total of 14 possible channels that the 802.11G (Wireless-G) can operate. Some channels are illegal in some countries. The frequencies from channel 1 to 14 ranges between 2.412 GHz to 2.484 GHz.
