What is 802.11n? | Wireless N | Wireless Standards: IEEE 802.11n-2009 is shortly called as 802.11n standard which uses multiple antennas to increase the data rates. The 802.11n or the Wireless N is often referred as MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output). The purpose of this standard is to increase the network throughput over the previous standards like 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. The data transmission rate is increased from 56 MBPS to 600 MBPS with the use of four antennas operating at a frequency of 40MHz. Wireless N standards can be used in both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz.
802.11 is a set of IEEE standards that takes care of all the wireless standards we use now. Among the 802.11 families, there are many amendments which includes 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11n, 802.11g and much more. These standards provide wireless connectivity to our homes and businesses. Let us briefly see what is Wireless N along with its pros and cons.
What is 802.11n?
The IEEE 802.11n is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11-2007 and builds on the previous 802.11 standards with the addition of multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) and 40MHz frequency band. The MIMO technology is succeeded by adding multiple antennas to pass more information rather than depending on a single antenna. It provides this through Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) which splits multiple independent data streams which are transferred simultaneously within a spectral channel of bandwidth.
802.11n or the Wireless N is operated in the frequency 40MHz which is also an additional feature incorporated in this. Therefore, It can be enabled in both 5.8GHz and 2.4GHz. The MIMO architecture along with the wider bandwidth channel is used to increase physical data transfer rate over the channels 802.11a (5.8GHz) and 802.11g (2.4GHz). The 802.11n also reduces the radio interference caused by other household appliances used indoor.
802.11n | Wireless N Wireless Signalling
The wireless N started to roll out since early 2006 and now most of the devices support the Wireless N standard. For an example, Apple started adding 802.11-n starting from tablets and phones after iPhone 4. If your mobile or other devices doesn’t support 802.11n, then you cannot enjoy the benefits and features of 802.11n. In case if your home appliances don’t support 802.11-n, then your wireless n devices can get the benefits of 802.11-N only if they connected directly with the help of ad-hoc wireless mode. All the Wireless-N devices support dual-band 802.11n. The wireless-n products fall into four main categories:
- 150 MBPS
- 300 MBPS
- 450 MBPS
- 600 MBPS
The basic Wireless N routers support 150MBPS Bandwidth with one wifi radio and one antenna. The 300 MBPS bandwidth contains two antennae and two wifi radio. While the 450 MBPS and 600 MBPS contains three and four of each respectively.
Pros and Cons
The below are the advantages of Wireless-N
- Maximum Network speed can be utilized
- More resistant to the signal interference from outside sources
The below are the disadvantages of Wireless-N
- Costs more than 802.11g
- Wifi standard is not yet finalized
- The use of multiple signals may interfere with nearby devices using the same frequency
